A heavy cast iron plaque, dated 1730 and marked with the initials C and D, depicts the Virgin Mary as the Mondsichelmadonna, standing on a crescent moon, holding the Christ Child in her left arm and a decorated sceptre in her right hand. Both figures wear crowns picked out in gold paint, and their robes are rendered in deep red, blue, and gold, bringing the relief vividly to life against the black iron ground.

According to the previous owner, this plaque was mounted above the front door of a house, fixed directly into the exterior wall through the four corner holes still visible on the front face. This was a widespread Catholic tradition in 18th century southern Germany and Austria, where a devotional image above the entrance served as a blessing and protection for the household. The initials CD flanking the crescent moon base almost certainly represent the name of the family or original commissioner who had it cast.

The 1730 date is cast directly into the iron, not added later. Four mounting holes are positioned at the corners of the plaque. There are no hanging brackets on the reverse, which is consistent with its history as a wall-mounted exterior piece.
At 12.1 kg, this is a substantial and commanding piece.

Type: Cast iron devotional wall plaque
Subject: Mondsichelmadonna with Child, scepter and crown, crescent moon, initialed CD, dated 1730
Style: Baroque religious relief, Central European
Size: 47.5 x 31 x 4 cm (18.7" x 12.2" x 1.6")
Weight: 12,1 kg (approx. 26.7 lbs)
Material: Cast iron, polychrome painted
Condition: Good antique condition consistent with approximately 295 years of age.
