A beautifully crafted African coiled grass basket with a fitted lid, hand-woven in a tight, even coil technique from natural grass or sisal fiber. The barrel-shaped body is decorated with a bold geometric pattern in three tones: naturel cream, warm caramel brown, and deep black, arranged in repeating diamond and zigzag forms that shift and evolve as they spiral up the body.
The lid features a different but complementary pattern, with concentric geometric rings around a small woven knob, edged with a broad black border. The inside of the lid is also finely woven, with a warm brown spiral base.
This style of tightly coiled lidded basket is associated with East or Southern African craft traditions, including Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia, where skilled weavers produce these pieces using natural plant fibers and traditional dyeing methods. The workmanship here is excellent, with an even, tight coil and well-executed pattern throughout.
The basket is in good vintage condition. There is some natural aging of the fibers on the inside, consistent with age and use. The exterior is vibrant and the structure is sound. Please zoom in on the photos for a close look.
Dimensions: approx. 13 cm diameter, 16 cm high with lid (5.1 x 6.3 inches)
Weight: 279 g
