This compact but visually powerful fat lava vase by Bay Keramik is a real showpiece. The squat, wide-shouldered form is glazed in a deep cobalt blue base, over which thick drips of volcanic red and black lava glaze run freely down the shoulder, pooling in dramatic jagged formations around the belly of the vase. The interior is finished in a glossy dark glaze, and the cobalt rim gives the piece a sharp, clean finish at the top. Bay Keramik was founded in 1933 in Ransbach-Baumbach, Germany, and became one of the most celebrated producers of West German art pottery. Their fat lava pieces from the 1960s and 1970s are now eagerly collected worldwide for their bold forms and expressive glaze work. This model, numbered 153-13, is in excellent vintage condition with no chips or cracks. The glaze is vivid and the form is perfect.
