This one has serious presence. A Carstens Tönnieshof fat lava vase from the 1960s, model 1271-17, made in West Germany.
The cylindrical neck sits above a rounded body, and the contrast between the two zones is part of what makes this piece so striking: the neck is covered in a deep teal-blue metallic glaze with fine vertical striations, while the body carries a thick, volcanic fat lava glaze in teal, amber-yellow and dark brown, pooling and crackling around a band of bold geometric relief panels. Each panel is a rectangular recessed window of colour, the glaze running and pooling inside them in a way that is never quite the same twice.
Carstens Tönnieshof was founded in 1946 in Fredelsloh, Lower Saxony, and became one of West Germany‘s most respected producers of mid-century decorative ceramics. Their fat lava glazes from the 1960s, introduced in the second half of that decade, are among the most collectible of the genre.
The Fredelsloh factory closed in 1977 and the company ceased operations entirely in 1984. The base carries the impressed mark with model number 1271-17 and West Germany.
