A genuinely impressive piece of German studio glass. This vase by Glaskunst Meißen is a heavyweight in every sense, a thick walled vessel with a remarkable exterior surface that mimics the look of weathered sandstone: warm olive and khaki tones, with fine white mineral streaks and russet cracks running across the surface in every direction.
It looks for all the world like a river stone that has been carved into a vase.
The interior, by contrast, is a deep glossy cobalt blue that catches the light beautifully and comes as a real surprise when you look inside.
The piece is sold in two orientations: upright, it reads as a classic rounded vase with a narrow circular opening at the top. Laid on its side, it transforms into a wide bowl shape with the opening as an elliptical mouth. Both work equally well as a display object, which gives this piece unusual versatility.
The original gold foil label reads "Handarbeit / Glaskunst Meißen," confirming it as a handmade piece from the well-regarded Meißen glassworks in Saxony.
The style and execution are characteristic of the 1970s, when German studio glass enjoyed a particularly creative period.
Please note: there is a small chip to the inner rim of the opening, visible in photo 7. It is not visible from the outside and does not affect the structural integrity or the display of the piece, but I want to be transparent about it. Priced accordingly.
