Some pieces don't need a label to tell you exactly what they are — and this is one of them. This is a rare and exceptionally beautiful Munakana ceramic hen box, designed by Kaarina Aho for Arabia Finland. The Munakana — Finnish for "hen" — was produced from the early 1950s through the mid-1960s in a variety of glazes and colour combinations, and this example is among the most striking I have ever come across. The exterior is finished in a near-black matte clay body, entirely covered in raised pale blue dots — hundreds of them, perfectly applied, creating an almost hypnotic texture. The interior of the base reveals a breathtaking glaze in deep blue-grey with purple tones, completely different in character from the exterior and an absolute surprise when you lift the lid. The underside of the lid shows the same rich, pooled blue interior glaze. The head retains its original matte finish with a single blue dot detail at the beak — a lovely touch. This piece is unmarked, which is well documented for early Munakana examples and in no way affects attribution — the form, dimensions, clay body, glaze character, and dot decoration are entirely consistent with authenticated Arabia Munakana pieces from the 1950s. Comparable unmarked examples have sold at auction for over €1,700. Dimensions: 20 cm / 7.9 inches long, 15 cm / 5.9 inches high, 13.5 cm / 5.3 inches wide. Weight: 790 grams. Condition: Excellent.
