This substantial hand carved wooden Laughing Buddha, known in Chinese tradition as Budai, radiates warmth and good cheer from every angle. Carved from a single piece of warm honey toned hardwood, the figure sits in a relaxed pose with his characteristic round belly, broad joyful smile and large ears.
He holds a yuanbao, the traditional Chinese gold ingot symbolising wealth and good fortune, in his right hand, while his left hand rests on his knee. A carved bead necklace drapes across his chest, and his robe is decorated with incised bamboo leaf motifs on the sides and back. The carving quality is excellent throughout, with fine detail in the face, fingers and fabric folds. The base is left in its natural unfinished wood state, as is typical for this type of handmade sculpture.

Dieser ausdrucksstarke, handgeschnitzte Lachende Buddha, in der chinesischen Tradition als Budai bekannt, strahlt Wärme und gute Laune aus. Aus einem einzigen Stück warmtonigem Hartholz geschnitzt, sitzt die Figur in entspannter Haltung mit seinem charakteristischen runden Bauch, breitem fröhlichem Lächeln und großen Ohren. In der rechten Hand hält er einen Yuanbao, den traditionellen chinesischen Goldbarren als Symbol für Reichtum und Glück, während die linke Hand auf seinem Knie ruht. Eine geschnitzte Perlenkette liegt über seiner Brust, und sein Gewand ist mit eingravierten Bambusblattmotiven an den Seiten und auf dem Rücken verziert. Die Schnitzqualität ist durchgehend ausgezeichnet, mit feinen Details im Gesicht, den Fingern und den Stofffalten. Die Unterseite ist im natürlichen, unbearbeiteten Zustand belassen, wie es für diese Art handgefertigter Skulpturen typisch ist.
