That red. Deep, volcanic, speckled with black like embers still glowing, it stops you in your tracks before you even notice the fish.
This ceramic vase comes from a private collection originally assembled in Malta and brought to a small shop in Konstanz, Germany.
The background glaze is a rich brick red with dense black brushwork giving it an almost lava-like texture. Against this, a boldly outlined fish is painted in black with white circles, olive green and cobalt blue, the style reminiscent of stained glass. The motif wraps partially around the body, with the design shifting as you turn the vase. The interior is glazed in clean cream white, and the base carries the handwritten model number 815.
The classic amphora shape, with its wide shoulders, tapered neck and flared rim, gives the piece a timeless quality that works equally well in a modern or eclectic interior.
The vase measures approximately 15 cm tall and 6.8 cm wide (5.9 × 2.7 inches) and weighs 304 g.
