A wonderfully charming ceramic planter by Marei Keramik, Germany, decorated all around with a hand-painted pastoral landscape scene. A large spreading tree dominates the front, its branches and rounded foliage rendered in muted sage green and grey against a soft powder-blue background. White fluffy clouds drift across the sky, and small black-faced sheep graze quietly at the base of the tree and on the reverse side. The overall palette is gentle and atmospheric, giving the piece an almost illustrative, storybook quality.
The form is a wide cylindrical planter with a softly rippled, undulating rim, glazed in a deeper steel blue. The interior is glazed in the same blue tone. The base is unglazed terracotta red and carries impressed marks reading Made in Germany, along with the numbers 11/1 and 23/11, consistent with Marei‘s marking system for form and size.
This is a less common Marei decor, the figurative pastoral painting style is far less frequently encountered than their usual abstract or geometric pieces, which makes this a particularly appealing find for collectors of West German ceramics.
