There is something deeply satisfying about this piece. A handmade French faïence rooster tureen by Michel Cougant, rendered with real attention to detail: bold red comb and wattle, a rich amber and brown body with individually sculpted feathers, a sweep of deep blue wing, and a creamy white belly sitting on a bright green grass base. The upper half lifts off as a lid, revealing a generous cream glazed bowl beneath, perfect for serving or simply storing on a shelf as a decorative object.
The base of the lid carries a printed inscription in elegant script, confirming this is a genuine faïence piece, made entirely by hand, offered exclusively by Michel Cougant. The quality of the modelling and the hand applied colours are well above the average farmhouse chicken tureen.
Michel Cougant was a French retailer and curator of traditional French craft objects, particularly faïence, active primarily in the 1970s and 1980s. Pieces sold under his name were handmade by French artisan potteries and distributed through his exclusive network, making them collectible today as representative of the best of French provincial ceramic craft. There are 3 other pieces of him in my store :)
In good vintage condition. There is some age related darkening to the unglazed rim of the lid where it sits against the bowl, as visible in the photos, consistent with normal use and age.

Der Deckel zeigt einen detailliert modellierten Hahn mit rotem Kamm, braunem Gefieder und blauem Flügel auf grünem Grasuntergrund. Die Unterseite des Deckels trägt eine gedruckte Widmung, die die handgefertigte Ausführung und den exklusiven Vertrieb durch Michel Cougant bestätigt. Die zugehörige cremefarbene Schale ist intakt. Altersgemäße Patina am unbeglasurten Rand, sonst guter Zustand.
