A classic vintage Russian matryoshka nesting doll set depicting five Soviet leaders, made in Russia in the early 1990s in the wake of the Soviet Union‘s dissolution. This type of political matryoshka became one of the most iconic souvenirs of the post-Soviet era, snapped up by tourists and collectors visiting Moscow and other Russian cities throughout the 1990s.
The set contains five hand-painted wooden dolls that nest inside one another.
From largest to smallest, the figures depicted are Mikhail Gorbachev, Leonid Brezhnev, Nikita Khrushchev, Joseph Stalin, and Vladimir Lenin.
Each figure is rendered as a caricature in a distinctive style, with recognisable features painted in earthy tones. The lower half of the dolls is painted in the colours of the Russian flag, black and red, with the Kremlin wall depicted around the base. The back of each doll is largely unpainted or minimally decorated, as is typical for this type of souvenir matryoshka.
The set is complete with all five pieces.
There is some wear and minor paint loss consistent with age and use, visible particularly on the back of some pieces. The joinery is still solid and all dolls open and close as intended.
A wonderfully evocative piece of Cold War and post-Soviet history, and a staple of any collection of Russian folk art or political memorabilia.
