Here is a beautifully understated piece of West German mid-century ceramic art, a vase by ES Keramik (Emons & Söhne, Rheinbach), model 608, dating to the 1960s.
The teardrop silhouette is elegant and timeless, rising from a small rounded foot to a narrow squared opening.
The exterior is covered in a wonderfully textural speckle glaze in grey and off-white, with dark volcanic speckling throughout, and two clean incised vertical stripes that run from neck to base, a restrained and graphic detail that gives the piece real presence.
ES Keramik (officially Emons & Söhne) was founded in Rheinbach near Bonn and produced art ceramics from 1954 until closure in 1974. Their glazes are known for organic texture and quality. The model 608 appears in various colourways; this grey speckle variant is particularly calm and versatile, sitting beautifully in both mid-century modern and Scandinavian-inspired interiors.
The base is unglazed on the rim and carries the impressed model number and West Germany mark. The interior shows the characteristic lava-like speckle glaze.
