This charming figural hen basket is hand-woven from dark-stained wicker and bamboo, with flat bamboo strips woven vertically through the body to create a beautiful two-tone striped texture.
The lid is shaped as a sitting hen, complete with a carved and painted red wooden comb, a glass eye with a warm amber iris, a small painted orange-red beak, and a red wattle detail below.
The basket separates cleanly into two halves: the hen lid and the deep round basket base with a natural bamboo rim.
The interior of both basket and lid is neatly finished with the same dark wicker weave. The construction quality is excellent, with a tight coiled base visible on the underside. This kind of hen basket was produced in Asia, primarily for the European and American decorative market, during the 1970s and 1980s, and makes a great storage piece for eggs, small items, or Easter decorations.
Good vintage condition. The wicker is intact, the bamboo strips are sound, and all the wooden features (comb, beak, wattle) are present and undamaged. Please zoom in on the photos for a close look.
