This striking rectangular wall plaque was made by Arno Kiechle, the renowned West German ceramics master from Fornsbach, active from the 1940s through the 1960s. Kiechle was known for his distinctive enamel-on-ceramic technique, combining a matte dark ground with vivid hand-painted enamel figures in a style that bridges folk art, Japonisme, and mid-century modernism.
This plaque depicts an elegant geisha in a flowing cream and burgundy kimono, holding a pale blue parasol, with two stylized swallows in flight above her and delicate grass etched into the lower ground.
The deep slate blue background, fine gold-outlined details, and the graceful proportions of the tall narrow format make this a very decorative piece.
The back carries Kiechle‘s characteristic scratched signature and an additional notation.
