This one stopped me in my tracks the moment I saw it up. It‘s a Bitossi Sahara series vase, made in Italy in the 1960s, bearing the "Cer Paoli" stamp on the base.
Ceramiche Paoli, based in Montelupo Fiorentino near Florence, collaborated with Bitossi and designer Aldo Londi, and the pieces they produced together are considered among the rarer finds from this era.
What sets this Cer Paoli variation apart is the vivid grass green glaze alongside the warm orange and earthy beige, a colour combination not found in the standard Bitossi Sahara line, which sticks to brown, beige, and orange.
The vase has a beautifully proportioned silhouette: a wide, low-shouldered body tapering toward the base, with a narrow neck flaring out into a trumpet rim. The entire surface is covered in hand-incised sgraffito decoration, bands of geometric and repeating motifs that echo Etruscan and Neolithic design traditions. The interior of the neck is glazed in the same rich green. The craftsmanship is exactly what you‘d expect from Bitossi at its 1960s peak.
Type: decorative vase
Style: mid-century modern, Italian studio pottery
Size: 16 cm tall, 12 cm wide at the widest point (approx. 6.3" x 4.7")
Material: glazed stoneware, hand-incised sgraffito decoration
Colours: grass green, amber orange, warm beige, dark brown
Condition is very good. There are minor scuffs consistent with age on the unglazed base, and the texture of the sgraffito surface shows some slight variation in glaze pooling, which is entirely characteristic of hand-made pieces. No chips, no cracks.
