A substantial and beautifully cast bronze medal commemorating the first holy communion, with an expressionistic relief of the Last Supper on the front. The figures are rendered in a bold, simplified style that is characteristic of mid century German religious art, with Christ at the centre of the table flanked by his disciples. The circular border reads "DENKE AN DEINE ERSTE KOMMUNION" (Remember your First Communion). A chalice is prominently placed at the centre of the table. The reverse carries the full German text of the words of institution of the Eucharist, beginning with "Ich bin bei euch bis an das Ende der Welt" (I am with you until the end of the world), followed by the biblical account of the Last Supper and closing with the Great Commission "Gehet hinaus in alle Welt und lehret alle Völker." A small hanging hole is present at the top of the reverse. The medal is heavy and solidly cast, with a warm dark bronze patina. No maker's mark is visible. Diameter: 10 cm (3.9 inches).
