This striking West German stoneware vase was made by Carstens Tönnieshof, one of the most collectible names in mid-century German studio pottery. The model number 7808-15 is clearly stamped on the unglazed terracotta base, along with the W. Germany mark, dating this piece to the 1970s. It‘s called Mooncrater
The form is a squat rectangular jug shape with a wide oval opening and a small decorative loop handle on the side. The front face is richly decorated with an applied relief pattern of raised dots, concentric circles, and a ribbed column motif, all in the bold graphic style characteristic of Carstens Tönnieshof.
The glaze is a dramatic combination of creamy off-white and deep chocolate brown, with a volcanic, matte-to-glossy texture typical of the West German fat lava aesthetic. The back and sides show a beautifully raw, uneven glaze with grey and sand tones melting into dark brown, giving each angle a different character.
A strong, sculptural piece that works equally well as a vase or as a standalone decorative object.
Condition: Very good vintage condition. No chips or cracks. Normal variation in glaze texture is part of the character of this piece, not a defect.
Dimensions:
Width: 8 cm / 3.1 inches
Height: 15.5 cm / 6.1 inches
Length: 17 cm / 6.7 inches
Weight: 768 g / 1.7 lbs
