A charming hand painted wooden nutcracker from the Erzgebirge region of East Germany, a classic of Central European folk art tradition. Dressed in a red jacket with dark green lapels and a decorative patterned waistcoat, this figure is full of character, from the rosy cheeks and painted blue eyes to the intricate folk motifs on the hat and base.
The nutcracker mechanism works as intended, opening at the chest to crack nuts in the traditional way. The paintwork is rich and detailed throughout, with fine hand painted floral scrollwork decorating the hat brim and base. No maker's mark on the base, consistent with many small Erzgebirge workshop pieces of this period.
In very good vintage condition, with only minor signs of age consistent with a well loved piece of folk art.
