This deeply moving ceramic crucifix was handmade by a local Catholic priest — a rare and special category of devotional object that carries both artistic and spiritual intention in equal measure. Rather than depicting the traditional suffering Christ alone on the cross, this piece shows Jesus in an embrace, his body merging with and holding a second figure close: a powerful visual interpretation of Christ‘s central message of love, protection, and belonging.
The cross form itself is organic and flowing, far removed from the rigid geometry of conventional crucifixes. It is finished in a warm off-white crackle glaze with smoky dark accents that settle into the recessed areas, giving the surface a timeless, stone-like quality.
INRI is hand-inscribed across the top beam.
The back is unglazed and bears the priest‘s personal monogram, fired into the clay before the piece was completed. A hanging hole is built into the back for wall display.
Objects made by clergy for their own communities occupy a very particular place in the world of folk religious art — they were made not for commercial sale but as acts of faith and craft, and they carry that energy with them.
Dimensions: 20 cm wide × 21 cm tall × 3.5 cm deep (7.9" × 8.3" × 1.4")
Weight: 635 g (1.4 lbs)
In very good vintage condition. The crackle glaze finish is intentional and part of the aesthetic. A small firing crack is visible on the figure‘s torso, consistent with the hand-built nature of the piece and not a structural concern, as visible in the photos.
Color may vary on your screen (slightly dark or lighter, not a completely different color)
Some lifestyle or atmospheric images in this listing may be created with digital mockups, so small variations can occur. Please check my original product photos for the exact item you will receive.
All my items are vintage. Please zoom in on the photos to review closely and expect there to be slight imperfections or signs of age. I point out anything that would not be attributed to normal wear
