A truly exceptional piece from one of Europe's oldest and most respected ceramic manufacturers. This large round egg plate with matching rooster salt and pepper shakers was made by Hollóháza of Hungary, marked on the base with the mold number 412-29 and the factory's characteristic ⓗ mark.
The plate is spectacular in its design: twenty individual egg cups radiate outward in a full floral arrangement around a raised central beaded disc that perfectly cradles the two companion shakers. The entire piece is covered in a deep, warm amber glaze that shifts beautifully between golden honey and rich brown tones depending on the light.
The scalloped outer edge follows the shape of the egg cups themselves, giving the whole plate an organic, almost sculptural quality.
The rooster shakers are plump and charming, glazed in matching amber with rosy pink combs and wattles, and dispense through small holes on the breast. The underside of each shaker has a corked opening.
Hollóháza was founded in 1777 in northeastern Hungary and has been producing ceramics of exceptional quality ever since. This piece, almost certainly from the 1960s, reflects the factory's midcentury output when young designers elevated its production to an important place in the European ceramics scene.
Heavy, solid, and beautifully made. This is the kind of set you do not let go of easily.

§ Deutsche Zusammenfassung
