This is a truly special piece of Swedish studio pottery. Made by Birgitta Lind at Lillterrsjö Keramik in Ångermanland, Sweden, this double-handled vase belongs to the celebrated Hällristning series, inspired by the ancient rock carvings found at Nämforsen, one of Scandinavia‘s most important Bronze Age petroglyph sites.
The body is wheel-thrown in a swirling marbled clay, a mix of cream, sand, and dark brown that mimics the layered rock face of the carvings themselves. Applied sgraffito figures of a reindeer and moose family are scratched through a reddish slip, giving them that prehistoric feel. Two flat strap handles sit on opposite sides, and the glaze is lead-free (blyfri glasyr, as stated on the original label still intact on the base). Signed by Birgitta on the base.
A collector‘s piece with real provenance and a story. The Nämforsen petroglyphs were created from the late Stone Age into the Bronze Age and draw visitors from all over the world. This vase is a beautiful, wearable piece of that heritage.
