A beautifully composed ceramic planter by Marei Keramik, West Germany, model 2051. The exterior is divided into three distinct zones: an upper and lower band of textured olive green glaze with a slightly granular, earthy surface, and a wide central band of creamy off-white speckled glaze decorated with a lightly incised diagonal crosshatch pattern.
The rippled wavy rim is glazed in the same olive green, and the interior is finished in a rich dark chocolate brown glaze. The contrast between the crisp white speckled centre and the organic green bands gives this planter a very pleasing, well-balanced look.
The base is unglazed with a terracotta-toned fired clay body and carries the impressed marks 2051 and Made in W.Germany. Marei Keramik, founded as Majolikafabrik Rheinbach and operating under the Marei name, was one of the key West German studio pottery producers of the mid-century era, known for their versatile range of glazes and forms.
