A cheerful set of five, and possible the cutest I ever seen, hand-painted Russian matryoshka dolls, each one opening to reveal the next, smaller figure nestled inside.
The deep burgundy and red palette is decorated with pink and rose floral motifs, lacy white aprons, and expressive painted faces, each with its own personality. The largest doll holds a fan and a bouquet; the smallest is a sweet little figure with a simple peony motif.
The painting style and gloss finish are typical of quality 1980s Russian folk craft production.
Each doll in the set is in good condition. The smallest piece shows simpler brushwork, as is common with the innermost dolls of hand-painted sets. All five pieces nest together correctly.
