A delightful vintage handmade picture featuring a needle felted red rose with green leaves, worked onto a natural grey wool felt background and set in a chunky octagonal wooden frame with a stepped moulded profile.
The rose is rendered in deep red, orange, and black outlining with touches of yellow at the centre, giving it an almost stained-glass quality. The green leaves are cleanly shaped and the black outlining throughout gives the whole composition a bold, graphic character.
Needle felting, the technique of pressing coloured wool fibres together with barbed needles to build up an image, was a popular folk craft particularly in German-speaking and Nordic countries from the 1970s onward. This example has the look of a carefully made, one-off handcraft piece rather than a mass-produced item.
The octagonal frame is solid wood with a warm honey oak tone and a triangle hanging hook on the cardboard backing.
