This vintage hand-carved Peruvian gourd, known as a mate burilado, is a fine example of one of the oldest and most celebrated folk art traditions of the Andes. The burilado technique, in which dried gourds are engraved by hand using fine chisels, dates back over 3,500 years in Peru and is still practiced today, particularly in the regions of Huancayo and Ayacucho.
The subject and style are classic Andean folk art: a rounded, flattened gourd form entirely covered in intricate hand-engraved scenes. The body wraps a continuous narrative of Andean life, with alpacas, human figures in traditional dress, birds, mountains and vegetation rendered in fine detail across multiple horizontal bands separated by geometric borders of zigzags and meanders.
The top of the gourd features a beautifully composed star or sun mandala, with radiating petals and concentric decorative rings. The base is plain and undecorated. The natural colour contrast between the warm golden-brown skin of the gourd and the darkened engraved lines gives the piece a rich, warm tone.
The gourd is solid and in good vintage condition, with no cracks or chips. Minor natural surface variation is consistent with age and the organic nature of the material.
