A wonderfully compact fat lava jug by Ruscha Keramik, West Germany, model number 304, dating to the 1960s. This little charmer packs a lot of character into a small form — a round, almost perfectly spherical body with a short stubby neck, a small loop handle, and a beautifully textured two-tone glaze.
The upper half is covered in a matte, speckled beige and sandy brown drip glaze that melts dramatically into a deep glossy black on the lower body and base, creating that signature contrast that makes West German fat lava pieces so collectible.
The glaze application is organic and expressive, with the speckled layer dripping and pooling irregularly at the transition — every piece like this is unique. The base is unglazed at the foot ring, showing the dark stoneware body underneath. No chips, no cracks, good vintage condition with the minor surface character you'd expect from a piece of this age.
A great shelf piece on its own or lovely grouped with other West German studio ceramics.
