If you know, you know. Saint Florian, patron saint of firefighters, pouring water over a burning building, surrounded by flames and the words WASSER and FEUER. This is not a piece that whispers, it announces itself, in deep oxblood red glaze over a richly detailed cast ceramic relief.
Every corner tells part of the story: the top panels show Florian‘s name flanked by symbols, the bottom panels hold water and fire scenes in miniature, and the central figure stands calm and commanding in the middle of it all. The detail throughout is remarkable, the kind of thing you keep discovering the longer you look.
The back is unglazed dark stoneware with the reverse impression of the relief. No maker‘s mark visible. The piece was likely produced for the German market, possibly as a commemorative or devotional item, somewhere in the mid-20th century.
A very specific find, but exactly the right thing for the right person: a firefighter, a collector of German folk art or religious ceramics, or simply someone who likes a piece with a story.
