This beautiful lidded ceramic jar was made by SC3 in Italy, most likely in the 1960s or early 1970s. SC3 is known for their distinctive marbled agateware ceramics, and this piece is a fine example of the technique: the exterior is covered in a dramatic swirling glaze of cream, rust brown, and deep black, with fine feathered lines running through each colour, creating an effect that resembles natural stone or flowing water. The glaze continues inside the jar and across the underside of the lid, making every surface a pleasure to look at.
The form is a classic cylindrical storage jar with a fitted domed lid and a turned knob handle. It would have traditionally been used as a tobacco jar, but works equally well as a storage jar for tea, coffee, cotton pads, or as a standalone decorative object on a shelf or desk.
The base is marked SC3 Italy with a small heart motif.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or restoration. Light wear to the unglazed foot rim consistent with age.
Dimensions:
Diameter: 11.5 cm / 4.5 inches
Height (with lid): 17.3 cm / 6.8 inches
Weight: 745 g / 1.6 lbs
