Details
This compact and beautifully crafted ceramic piece is a wonderful example of Helmut Schäffenacker‘s distinctive West German studio pottery. Schäffenacker (1921–2010) was a highly respected Ulm-based ceramist known for his bold abstract designs and expressive glazework, and this small square ashtray or catch-all dish perfectly demonstrates his signature style.

The exterior walls carry deeply incised abstract relief motifs in dark brown against a warm sandy beige glaze, with the same pattern repeating on all four sides.
The interior is glazed in a deeply lustrous dark burgundy and black drip glaze with hints of teal around the rim, creating a striking contrast between the rustic exterior and the jewel-like interior. The piece rests on a narrow unglazed foot rim, with the model number 645 stamped into the base.
This piece works beautifully as a small dish, ring holder, or desk accessory.
