A wonderfully characterful and entirely unique handmade studio pottery bowl in the form of a hen or chicken. The wide, organic bowl body is wheel-thrown and hand-shaped into a softly angled, almost square form, with three-dimensional applied elements bringing the hen to life: a modelled comb and wattle at the head, small wing nubs along the rim, and feet formed from applied clay at the base.
The exterior is decorated with alternating upward brushstrokes in yellow-green and dark navy blue, suggesting feathers or grass, painted loosely and energetically over a pale sandy matte glaze. The interior is a clean, glossy white.
The base is unglazed stoneware with a hand-painted artist‘s monogram in black, confirming this is a one-of-a-kind piece made by an individual ceramist rather than a production studio. The style and palette suggest a European, likely German or Scandinavian, origin from the 1970s.
Please note: one small applied clay element on the side of the bowl has partially detached, visible in photo 5. The piece is otherwise structurally sound, and this minor imperfection does not affect the overall look when displayed.
