This wonderfully textured fat lava vase was made by Vest Keramiek in Gouda, the Netherlands, designed by Marius and Hugo van Woerden in the 1970s. The Van Woerden brothers were celebrated for their distinctive "schuimglazuur" (foam glaze), a richly bubbling, porous lava glaze that gives each piece a completely unique surface.
This example is covered in a creamy off-white glaze deeply mottled and speckled with warm amber and dark chocolate brown, applied over a sturdy rectangular stoneware body.
The form is bold and architectural, with four flat sides rising to a narrow neck and a wide, flared disc rim that is highly characteristic of the Van Woerden aesthetic. Each face of the vase carries its own glaze texture, ranging from horizontally ridged and pitted to softly bubbled, making this a piece that rewards being viewed from every angle.
The base is unglazed and carries an oval impressed recess, typical of this producer.
There is no incised maker‘s mark on the base, which is entirely consistent with Vest Keramiek, as the Van Woerden brothers were known never to sign or mark the bottoms of their ceramics. Attribution is based on the characteristic glaze, form, and construction.
In very good vintage condition. No chips, cracks, or repairs. The open bubbles and darker pooling spots in the glaze are entirely natural to the fat lava process and not damage. Please zoom in on all photos and expect minor signs of age consistent with a piece that is approximately 50 years old.
