This lidded ceramic box is shaped as a ripe, ribbed tomato in full harvest glory. The lid forms the upper half of the fruit, crowned by a deeply glazed dark green stem and calyx handle, while the bowl forms the lower half. Together they make a satisfying, rounded whole.
What makes this piece truly special is the glaze. A rich, mottled red ranging from deep crimson to warm orange-red, with dark flecks and subtle depth that gives it an almost volcanic quality. This style of red flambe-inspired glaze was popular with Italian ceramic workshops in the 1960s and 1970s and required considerable skill to achieve. The interior of the bowl is glazed in the same vivid red, with an unglazed ring where the lid rests.
The piece is marked on the base: Italy, model number 67166, and what appears to be a maker's mark partially obscured by the glaze. The maker has not been conclusively identified, but the quality and character of the piece are consistent with mid-century Italian artisan production.
A wonderful piece for the kitchen or table, equally at home holding salt, olives, condiments, or small trinkets. Pairs beautifully with the Bassano tomato serving platter also available in this shop.
In good vintage condition. No chips or cracks noted. Normal variation in glaze pooling is part of the character of this piece.
