A striking black glazed ceramic mannequin head by Scheurich, model 701, made in West Germany in the 1980s. The head is finished in a deep, high-gloss black glaze that gives it an almost lacquer-like appearance, reflecting light with a quiet intensity.
The facial features are softly modelled, abstracted but clearly legible, with closed eyes, a straight nose, and gently parted lips. The piece stands on a tiered round base and is hollow inside.
Scheurich mannequin heads in black are among the most sought-after pieces from the West German ceramic era, and this example is a particularly impressive size.
The form is as at home in a minimalist interior as it is in a moody, eclectic space. It works beautifully as a hat or jewellery display, or simply as a sculptural object in its own right.
The base carries the impressed Scheurich mark with model number 701.
In very good vintage condition with no chips or cracks noted.
