This little vase has a quiet confidence about it. The form is angular and compact, a flattened rectangular body tapering to a small rectangular opening at the top, with softly rounded corners that keep it from feeling too rigid.
One face carries a bold diagonal ribbed texture, partly washed over with a lush crystalline lava glaze in shades of teal, soft green, and warm yellow against a matte cream ground. The other three sides are left plain, the unglazed matt cream giving the piece a calm, almost sculptural quality.
The glaze clusters are beautifully organic, pooling and blooming along the ridges in a way that feels less like decoration and more like something that simply happened in the kiln. That unpredictability is exactly what makes West German lava glaze pieces so appealing.
The base is marked 652/15 in relief, the model and size number typical of West German production. No manufacturer's name is present, but the quality of the body and glaze is consistent with the better producers of the period.
In excellent vintage condition. A few tiny specks of glaze variation as would be expected from this type of firing, nothing that detracts.
