This caught my eye immediately for the sheer warmth of it. In fact, I saw it from my car as we were driving by. A WMF annual Christmas plate from 1977, hand-painted in Germany ("handgemalt" on the back), depicting a Christmas angel in a richly embroidered red dress blowing a yellow trumpet, flanked by dark green fir trees against a deep charcoal background.
The year 1977 is incorporated into the border decoration on the front of the plate itself. The border is cream-white with a repeating circular folk motif in brown, and the whole piece sits in its original black wrought iron hanging frame with a decorative scrollwork hanger at the top.
WMF, the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik, produced these annual keepsake Christmas plates in the 1970s as collectible decorative pieces. The hand-painted ceramic disc clips securely into the iron frame, which has the WMF mark on the back. The motif is deeply rooted in the South German and Austrian folk tradition of the Christmas angel, the Christkind, as messenger and herald of the season.
Type: decorative wall plate, annual Christmas plate, wall hanging
