A captivating vintage hand-carved wooden wall plaque depicting Aquarius the Water Bearer, the eleventh sign of the zodiac. This is the most substantial of a set of three, carved in deep relief from solid wood and painted in a polychrome palette of dusty blue, russet red, warm cream and grey-green.
The water bearer figure is depicted crouching within a circular medallion, surrounded by swirling carved water rendered in expressive, flowing strokes. A large vessel is held at the figure‘s side, referencing the classic iconography of this air sign. The circular frame is bordered in red, set within a square panel painted in a wonderful atmospheric blue-grey that has developed a rich patina over decades. The side of the panel reveals the beautiful end-grain wood rings of the solid timber block from which this was carved.
A metal hanging hook is fitted to the back, ready to hang immediately. There are no cracks or structural issues; the wear and paint loss across the surface is entirely consistent with age and adds greatly to the character of the piece. Two companion panels depicting Leo and Gemini are also available in the shop.
