A wonderfully expressive vintage hand-carved wooden wall plaque depicting Gemini the Twins, the third sign of the zodiac. This is a substantial, weighty piece of European folk art, carved in deep relief from solid wood and painted in a polychrome palette of warm cream, dusty blue, red and grey-green.
Two figures are carved standing close together, hands clasped, embodying the duality and togetherness of the Gemini sign. The carving has real depth and personality, with the figures‘ features and clothing rendered in confident, expressive strokes.
The circular medallion is framed by a carved red border, set within a scalloped square panel painted in atmospheric grey-green tones.
The background of the medallion shows the natural wood grain beneath a creamy worn surface, giving the piece an aged, almost medieval quality.
A small metal hanging hook is fitted to the back. The bottom edge shows faint handwritten inscriptions in paint, adding a further layer of history and provenance to the piece.
There are no cracks or structural issues; the wear and paint loss across the surface is entirely consistent with age and original use. Two companion panels depicting Leo and Aquarius are also available in the shop.
