There's something quietly magical about this piece. This substantial wrought iron candelabra by Boda Smide of Sweden is shaped as a stylised tree, its three arms ending in candle cups and its branches adorned with bold cutout leaves. Hanging from each outer arm is a small hand-blown glass ball ornament designed by Bertil Vallien for Boda — that delicate, bubble-textured glass is immediately recognisable and adds a wonderful contrast to the raw, hammered iron.
Bertil Vallien is one of Sweden's most celebrated glass designers, long associated with Kosta Boda, and his small glass ornaments produced in collaboration with Boda Smide are increasingly sought after by collectors of Scandinavian design. The hammered texture throughout the tree trunk and base is beautifully executed, and the sturdy crescent-shaped foot keeps everything firmly in place.
A genuinely impressive set, full of character and very much in the spirit of 1970s Scandinavian home decor.
