This generous rectangular serving tray was hand painted in Portugal by Figcer, from the Zona de Conímbriga near Coimbra, one of Portugal's most celebrated ceramic regions. The white earthenware is decorated entirely by hand in cobalt blue, in the style of 17th century Delftware, as indicated by the "Sec-XVII" notation on the base.
The design is wonderfully lively: a flying bird, a crouching rabbit, exotic plants, swirling florals, and a pagoda-like tower fill the central field, all surrounded by a scrolling border of waves and dots.
Two pierced loop handles at each short end make it easy to carry, and add a classic Portuguese folk character to the form. This is the kind of piece that looks equally at home on a dining table loaded with cheese and bread, displayed on a dresser, or hung on a wall.
